35. Reckless Abandon by Stuart Woods

Again, what is it with the jacket blurbs that don’t actually reflect what’s in the book? It’s kind of close, but even though I just finished reading the book, I truly cannot recall “the moment when her presence creates a great danger to both of them.”

In Reckless Abandon, the smooth and charming cop-turned-lawyer Stone Barrington returns — this time on the hunt for a killer with the guts to think he can hide out among the crowds of New York City. What this fugitive does not know can definitely hurt him: Stone’s partner in this endeavor is none other than Holly Barker, the Orchid Beach, Florida, police chief who would love nothing better than to put the man where he belongs, behind bars.

The man is running from more than one audacious and shocking crime scene in Florida, and now it’s up to Stone and Holly to track him down before he can strike again. Stone is, well, glad to have a woman like Holly at his side, right until the moment when her presence creates a great danger to both of them. But their greatest obstacle in the chase could be the government insiders who profess to have the public’s best interests in mind.

And then let’s think about the 100 improbable things that happen before breakfast. Everything is just way too easy, and there are far too many coincidences, for the story to be all that believable. Of course, that’s not to say it’s a really bad book. If you can suspend belief enough, it’s kind of fun. Definitely a quick read.
