A Meme!

I haven’t managed to finish a book in a while… mostly because I’m reading five books all at once. So it’s the perfect time to get tagged for a meme! John from The Pageless Book tagged me for this one… One Book. So here goes:

One book that changed my life: Stranger in a Strange Land by Robert Heinlein. Maybe I was too young the first time I read it (4th grade), so I didn’t understand everything that was going on. What I did get was that I didn’t have to live in the box the grownups around me wanted me to be in. That’s when I started thinking maybe I should go to medical school instead of wandering into the nursing career my mom picked out for me.

One book that I’ve read more than once: There have been a lot in this category, but the one I read most often is Marion Zimmer Bradley’s Mists of Avalon. Arthurian legend is so much more powerful when told from a woman’s point of view.

One book I’d want on a desert island: That would easily be a very large, very complete dictionary. I love language, I love words, and yeah… I read dictionaries for fun.

One book that made me laugh: There are a lot of these, too, so I’ll go with Janet Evanovich’s One for the Money. That’s the first of her Stephanie Plum novels, and they’re all laugh-out-loud funny.

One book that made me cry: Following Foo by B.D. Wong. There have been others, of course, because for some reason I keep picking up books by authors who just gotta go tugging on my heartstrings. When he spoke about his son who died, I was immediately transported to the NICU where I spent four days with Mackenzie before she died.

One book that I wish had been written: My Life and Times by Jesus of Nazareth. No, seriously. Think about all the confusion and conflict that would have been avoided in the past 2000 years if he had told us what he meant instead of letting other people tell us what he meant.

One book I’m currently reading: Ok, so I’m actually working on five of them, but the one tucked next to me on the chair here (and the closest one to being finished) is Plato and a Platypus Walk Into a Bar… understanding philosophy through jokes by Thomas Cathcart and Daniel Klein.

One book I’ve been meaning to read: There are a lot of these, too, but the one that been on my To Be Read pile the longest is The Gospel of Mary Magdalene by Jean-Yvees Leloup.

Now I’m supposed to tag people to go make their own lists. If you’re reading this, consider yourself tagged.
