Rising Phoenix

Rising PhoenixWhew. Finally finished this one. And not because it was hard to get into. Not at all. Mills’ first book is very, very good. (And his subsequent ones are even better, so if you like mysteries and/or FBI-type thrillers you had better check this guy out.)

No, life got in the way. First, there were all the DVDs that came from Netflix… the entire third season of Boston Legal. And there was art to be created! And music to memorize for this weekend’s concerts. And I had made a commitment to clean out the box of papers (that I laughingly call my filing system) and actually organize them. And there was other stuff, too… like working and sleeping and seeing Plaid Tidings at Cap Rep. And then we replaced the basic cable box with a DVR cable box, so I had to play with that for a while.

But I finally finished Rising Phoenix and am on to the next book!

The Second Horseman

The Second HorsemanThe second horseman of the apocalypse is war. Or, in this case, a guy named Edwin. Seriously.

I’m not sure about this one. Yes, it’s well-written. Yes, the characters are interesting and engaging and, heck, even likable. And it is fiction, so there doesn’t need to be that ring of truth to it. But there’s just something… silly… about it that takes the enjoyment factor down a notch. Maybe it’s just that I can hear fear-mongers seriously saying, “Oh, yes. That could happen.”

Fade

FadeThis is another one by Kyle Mills. He certain has a way with characters! He creates “bad guys” that are incredibly likable. And some of the guys who are supposed to be “the good guys” are actually quite creepy. Off to read the next one, The Second Horseman, before getting to Gorman’s third in the Sam McCain series.

Free Fall

Free FallThis is the next book in the series by Kyle Mills. Just as interesting and fast-paced as the previous. I’m staying up too late, eating lunch alone, being anti-social. Perhaps for my next book, I’ll pick something less riveting. Unfortunately, I also have Burn Factor waiting to be read… both of these books came from Booksfree so I will be anti-social and read the second one quickly as well so I can return them.

I finally made it over to the library and borrowed six books. I’ve already read two of them… The Bishop Goes to The University by Andrew Greeley and The Fourth Perimeter by Tim Green. Like all Greeley books I’ve read, this one was fun and fast. The major bonus with Greeley books is that most of them are set in Chicago. They make me miss Chicago (though never the weather, of course). The Green book was interesting, but getting through it was more of a chore than Greeley and Mills. And not quite as believable, either. But if you like mysteries and have read everything else, go for it.

Storming Heaven

Storming HeavenFirst, I have to thank Ginny for turning me on to an author I’d never read before… Kyle Mills. The story is a mystery with plenty of twists and turns, interesting and likable characters and a writing style that keeps the pages turning. I’ve got the rest of his books in my Booksfree queue.

On the Bookcrossing scene, I released two books at the grocery store this morning. The exceptional thing is that I did it in a non-sneaky way. I just left then on the bench in the entryway with “I’m a Free Book!” stickers and walked away. Now, that wasn’t so hard. More wild releases are in my future!
